On Friday, September 26, tragedy struck in Globe, Arizona, when heavy rains and sudden flooding overwhelmed the Mellema family’s home. In the middle of this frightening moment, one of our Phoenix Rising FC Southeast Valley players, Tim Mellema, showed extraordinary courage that saved his family.
Arizona has seen record rainfall in recent years, and this storm was no exception. Living downhill from a mountain and near a usually dry creek bed, the Mellema family suddenly found themselves surrounded by rushing water that quickly filled their home. The pressure of the flood made it impossible to open the front door, trapping the family inside.
That’s when Tim acted. At just a teenager, he broke a high window with his fist, creating an escape route for his parents and sister. In the process, he suffered a devastating injury to his arm, severing an artery and damaging muscles and nerves. Even with this life-threatening wound, Tim guided his family out of the house and through knee-to-waist deep floodwaters toward safety.
As they made their way to higher ground in the dark, a passing nurse saw them and stopped. She was able to apply a makeshift tourniquet to slow the bleeding, a moment of quick thinking that likely saved Tim’s life. He was rushed to a local hospital before being flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment.
The Mellema family is grateful to be alive, but their challenges are only beginning. They’ve lost their home and belongings, and Tim faces a long recovery with extensive medical bills.
This is where our community can make a difference. We are coming together to support Tim and his family with:
- Medical and recovery expenses
- Temporary housing and essentials
- Food, clothing, and other daily needs
Every act of kindness matters—whether it’s a donation, supplies, or simply sharing this story. Support is being coordinated through our Southeast Valley Region, led by Derek Yen, who can connect anyone wishing to help directly with the family.
Tim’s bravery in the face of disaster is nothing short of inspiring. He put his family first and led them through a moment that could have ended very differently. Now, it’s our turn to step up for him.
Let’s rally together to support Tim and his family as they recover and rebuild.
