At Phoenix Rising FC Youth Soccer, we believe that every part of the game matters — the players, the coaches, the families, and yes, the referees. Without referees, there is no game. They are the ones who ensure a safe, fair, and fun environment for our athletes to compete and grow.
Unfortunately, youth soccer across the country is facing a serious shortage of referees. Many officials are leaving the game because of the harassment, verbal abuse, and even threats they endure from the sidelines. This reality is not just discouraging for them — it directly affects our players. Fewer referees means fewer games and fewer opportunities for our kids to enjoy the sport they love.
Why Respect Matters
- Referees are learning too. Just like our players, referees are developing their skills. Mistakes will happen — but respect is non-negotiable.
- Parents and coaches set the tone. The way adults behave on the sidelines becomes the model for our players. Positivity and support matter more than any call on the field.
- We rise together. When referees feel supported, the entire game environment improves. Better experiences mean better retention, which means more referees for future seasons.
Our Commitment as a Club
Through our Respect the Ref initiative, Phoenix Rising FC Youth Soccer is creating a consistent, positive culture across all levels of our club:
- Game-day reminders: Coaches and announcers will emphasize sportsmanship before every kickoff.
- Sideline visuals: Banners and signs will highlight messages like “Respect = Rising Culture” and “No Ref, No Game.”
- Player engagement: Teams will take a “Respect Pledge,” and captains will thank referees before and after every match.
- Parent partnership: We ask families to remember that referees are part of the team, and to treat them with the same dignity and encouragement given to players and coaches.
This is bigger than one game or one season. By respecting referees, we are helping protect the future of youth soccer. Together, let’s make Rising culture stand for fairness, respect, and pride on and off the field.
No Ref, No Game. Respect the Whistle. #RespectTheRef
