As tryout season arrives, it’s easy to feel the pressure—whether you’re a first-time soccer parent or have been through the process before. At Phoenix Rising FC Youth Soccer, we want to assure you that this time doesn’t need to be a stressful one. Tryouts are not a final exam—they’re a step in a much longer journey, and our coaches are here to support your family every step of the way.
Our goal during tryouts is simple: to get to know each player. We want to see their strengths, their personality, and their passion for the game. We encourage every player to come as they are—confident, joyful, and true to themselves. There’s no need to try and be someone else, or to feel like they have to be perfect. What matters most is effort, attitude, and a love for learning.
For parents, we know that uncertainty can lead to stress—especially when it comes to team placement. Please know that every player is placed on a team where we believe they will grow the most. Our coaching staff is dedicated to making thoughtful, long term decisions for every player’s individual pathway. We aim to place players where they’ll be challenged appropriately, gain confidence, and continue to fall in love with the game. Regardless of team assignment, each player in our club is part of a larger developmental plan, and our responsibility is to guide them in becoming the best version of themselves – on and off the field. A spot on a second or third team is not a setback; it’s often the beginning of something great. We have many players in our club who began their journey on those very teams and eventually signed to play Division I college soccer. Development is not linear, and success takes time.
We encourage families to embrace this process as an opportunity, not a judgment. If you or your player are feeling overwhelmed or unsure, we ask that you reach out directly to your coach. Our staff is here to answer your questions, provide clarity, and support your child’s development—not just as a player, but as family.
At Phoenix Rising, we believe in the potential of every player who walks onto the field. Tryouts are just the beginning, and we’re honored to be part of the journey.
